Title VI

Through a federally funded grant awarded by the Administration on Aging’s Office of Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian Program, Denakkanaaga provides shelf-stable food deliveries, outreach, information, referrals, advocacy, and support to Elders in Dot Lake, Eagle, Minto, Nenana, Manley Hot Springs, Tanacross, Tetlin, and Tok.

Additionally, the grant provides information and assistance to non-paid caregivers of Elders. Denakkanaaga Title VI staff travel to these eight communities to meet and provide these services annually.

Denakkanaaga is passionate about improving the quality of life of Native Elders and their non-paid caregivers by creating environments of dignity, respect, and empowerment.

The current focus is on supporting our Interior caregivers by providing information, access assistance, training, and respite grants to family and unpaid caregivers caring for Native Elders at home.

Denakkanaaga provides nonmedical assistance to non-paid family caregivers and Native Elders to help maintain their independence in their home community.

CONTACT TITLE VI PROGRAM

Cultural Programs offer connection to community and culture by adhering to the core values of the organization. Cultural programs support Denakkanaaga’s core value to “continue traditions, art, cultural values, language, and subsistence life” through the continuation of the Our People Speak video series, Native language programs, food sovereignty video series, and culture camps and workshops. These programs create spaces for Elders to speak about the topics and issues that are important to them, which uplifts Denakkanaaga’s mission to be the Elder voice for the people.

Collaborations

Cultural Programs builds community through the Alaska Native Cultural Coalition of the Interior, which promotes Denakkanaaga’s core value of “unity among Native organizations and people.” Denakkanaaga also works with the school district and various organizations to connect Elders with the community.

“My late husband, Chief Richard Frank always said, “I am not the answer – when we work together, we are the answer. I truly believe this, because as Elders, we always want to talk with our youth because they are going to carry on our traditions and cultures.”
